Pasi Paruppu Sambar | Moong dal Sambar | Tiffin Sambar

Pasi Paruppu Sambar recipe is made with moong dal or Pasi Paruppu in tamil. Very light recipe which is easy to digest.as its very light and very healthy any age group person can have it.There is no tamarind used in this sambar and its so easy to make this recipe.Pasi Paruppu sambar is specially made for tiffin items like idli, dosa, pongal ,Roti etc

Cook Time:15 mins
Serves: 4
Ingredients:

  • Pasi Paruppu / Yellow Moong dal- 1/2 cup
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 small tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chillies slit
  • 2 teaspoon ghee / Oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 pinch of hing/asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon sambar powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 springs coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1 spring curry leaves

Method:

  • Take a pressure cooker and add in moong dal,add 2 cups of water and cook in a pressure cooker for 2 whistles. Switch off the flame and set aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan and add in the mustard seeds,cumin seeds , urad dal,hing and curry leaves
  • Add in onion,green chillies,tomatoes and fry till the tomatoes get mushy. Add in the sambar powder,turmeric powder and salt.
  • Let it cook for 2 minutes in low flame so the raw smell of the masala powders go off.
  • Add 1/2 cup of water and allow it to boil.
  • Add in the boiled dal and mix well.You can add more water if the sambar is too thick.
  • Add the coconut and let it cook on low flame for a couple of minutes.
  • Add in the coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
  • Pasi Paruppu sambar is ready !!!

Sambar without using Sambar powder

 
         This Sambar Recipe is my mother and grandmother's recipe in which no sambar powder is added.I too prepare the same way,only after my marriage I started using sambar powder.Any kind of veggies can be added,you can use drumsticks, brinjals, pumpkin, beans, carrots, squash,raddish, ladies finger etc. There are varieties in Sambar you can prepare using Sambar powder,without Sambar powder, only using dry red chilli etc...I have prepared with veggies like beans,carrot and squash without using the sambar powder...



Prep Time: 15 mins 
Cook Time : 15 mins   
Serves : 4

Ingredients:
  • Toor dal -150 gms
  • 10 small onions
  • 2 tomatoes,chopped
  • 1 green chilli,slit
  • 1 cup vegetables 
  • 1 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup tamarind water
  • hing
  • 1 tbsp oil
For Tempering:
  • curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp oil / Ghee
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp jeera
  • 1/4 tsp Fenugreek
Method:
  • Cook toor dal with 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and hing in pressure cooker.
  • Mash the cooked dal ,Cut the vegetables and keep aside.
  • Now in a kadai add 1 tbsp oil fry onion,green chilli for 1 min.
  • Add in tomatoes and saute for a min and then add the vegetables,fry for a minute.
  • Add in the masala powders and pour 1 cup of water and allow it to boil.
  • Once the vegetables are semi cooked add the tamarind water salt and cooked dal.
  • Allow it to boil till the required consistency.
  • Finally temper the items under tempering and add it in the sambar..
Tempering at the last gives more flavour and taste to the sambar...


Sambar is ready to be served with Rice, Idli,Dosa etc...

Arachuvitta Kadhamba Sambar

Prep Time: 15 mins     Cook Time: 10 mins       Serves : 5

        Arachuvitta Kadhamba sambar ......The word "Arachuvitta" is a Tamil word which means to grind..."Kadhambam" means mixed....This is a type of sambar that has freshly ground masala made of coconut, Red dry chillies,coriander seeds, channa dal,pepper and cumin with mixed vegetables. This is a very traditional South Indian Sambar,very tasty and can be served as side dish for rice,idli and dosas...
Ingredients:
  • Toor Dal(Thuvaram parupu) - 1 cup
  • Mixed Vegetables of your choice
  • Tamarind - 1 lemon sized ball
  • 1/2 cup Onion
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 small piece Jaggery
  • Salt for taste.
Roast and Grind:
  • 4 Dry red chilli
  • 1 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 1 tsp Jeera
  • 2 tsp Chana Dal / Kadala Paruppu
  • 1/8 tsp Fenugreek / Vendhayam
  • 1/4 cup Coconut
  • Hing 
        
To Temper:
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp Urad Dal - 1/2 tsp
  • 1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • 2 Small Onions sliced
Method:
  • Pressure cook toor dal with turmeric powder and enough water till its cooked , mash it well, keep aside.
  • In a kadai add 1 tsp oil and roast the ingredients under 'to roast and grind' until golden brown and grind it to a coarse powder or a fine paste by adding little water. Keep aside.
       
  • In the same kadai, heat 1 tbsp of oil,add the Onions,saute for a min,add chopped tomato and saute it well.
     
  • Add the veggies,I used Brinjal,carrot,beans,Avarai,Capsicum. Saute till raw smell goes.
  • Add little turmeric powder,water and boil it till the veggies are semi cooked
     
  • Now add the ground paste,Cooked dal,tamarind water and allow it to boil till the veggies are cooked and is soft.Add required salt.
         
  • Allow it to boil till the sambar is thick and is of desired consistency.
  • Add a small piece of jaggery and mix it well.
  • At last in a pan add 1 tsp Ghee,add the items under to temper and mix it to the Sambar.....
         
Arachuvitta Kadhamba Sambar is ready to b served with Idli/Dosa/Rice...
